Francisco has a bachelor in Environmental Health and Biotechnology and a master’s degree in Marine Sciences – Marine Resources. Before beginning his PhD, Francisco spent nearly four years working at the Histology and Electron Microscopy Service at the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC) of the University of Porto. During his PhD, he studied the self-aggregation of the Ataxin-3 protein in vitro and in vivo. He received an EMBO Exchange Grant to visit Sarah Butcher’s laboratory at the University of Helsinki to explore the structure of Ataxin-3 aggregates with cryo-EM. Francisco is a Postdoc in the Schur group, where he uses cryo-electron tomography to study the extracellular matrix.
